Triphenylsulfonium nonaflate has excellent solubility and thermal stability. It is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents such as ethers and alcohols. It is strongly acidic.
Triphenylsulfonium nonaflate is commonly used as a catalyst in organic synthesis. It can be used as an electrophilic reagent and a source of strong acids that can induce cyclization reactions.
Triphenylsulfonium nonaflate is also used in organic batteries, fluorescent dyes, photographic materials, coatings and catalysts.
