Triphenylsulfonium triflate is solid at room temperature. It is soluble in some organic solvents such as dichloromethane, methanol and acetonitrile, but less soluble in water. Triphenylsulfonium triflate is relatively stable and not easily decomposed by conventional temperatures and light. It is weakly acidic in aqueous solution.
Triphenylsulfonium triflate is widely used in organic synthesis as a catalyst and ligand, and is commonly used in organic chemical reactions such as boron alkenylation, borohydride and reduction reactions.
